Specialty Consulting, Inc. (SPC) was tasked with providing Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) testing services for the completion of the Palmer Elementary project, overseen by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for LEED certification. This project, aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability and improving the quality of educational spaces, involved the construction of an addition and a new roof while transforming a modular classroom unit into a green space and a playground.

SPC’s responsibilities included a review of construction drawings and an assessment of the building’s HVAC system. Following this, they conducted Pre-Occupancy IEQ testing, adhering to EPA protocols, to assess parameters such as Formaldehyde, PM10, TVOCs, CO, and Target VOCs. Sampling was performed across three locations within the building, covering various air handling and make-up air systems.

The unique challenge of this project lay in aligning the testing procedures with LEED requirements. SPC’s Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) devised a meticulous  plan approved by the project stakeholders, ensuring compliance with LEED standards. The testing results provided valuable data, enabling the developer to earn additional LEED credits, advancing their pursuit of higher LEED certification.

By leveraging its expertise and adhering to industry standards, SPC successfully contributed to enhancing the Indoor Environmental Quality of the Palmer Elementary project, facilitating its sustainability goals and reducing environmental impact.
