Specialty Consulting, Inc. (SPC) managed the ambient air quality monitoring for the demolition of the Malcolm X College building. Before any demolition activities began, SPC conducted a three-day baseline background ambient air monitoring. During the demolition, SPC performed daily ambient air monitoring, with an air sampling professional (ASP) observing the activities each shift. The ASP was responsible for notifying the contractor if any visible emissions were detected.
Lab results for asbestos, lead, and PM10 were provided within 24 working hours of sample collection, allowing for prompt action if air quality levels exceeded safety thresholds. Asbestos samples were collected and analyzed using the Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) method, ensuring precise detection of asbestos fibers. Lead samples were collected using high-volume Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) samplers, and PM10 samples were collected using high-volume PM10 samplers.
The unique challenges of this project included maintaining continuous and accurate air quality monitoring throughout the demolition process and ensuring rapid lab result turnaround to address any potential air quality issues swiftly. SPC's rigorous monitoring and adherence to safety protocols ensured a safe demolition process, protecting both workers and the surrounding community from harmful airborne contaminants.
