Specialty Consulting, Inc. conducted comprehensive indoor air quality (IAQ) assessments at various City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) facilities. These assessments were requested in response to complaints about IAQ at these facilities. At Truman College, testing was performed in the inorganic and organic chemical storage room to determine if stored chemicals contributed to elevated indoor levels. IAQ testing was conducted post-construction at the new Malcolm X College building to ensure effective ventilation and the absence of construction-related dust and fumes in occupied areas. An unexplained odor on the 2nd floor prompted an IAQ assessment at Olive Harvey College.

SPC’s team of industrial hygienists, engineers, and certified environmental professionals conducted thorough walk-throughs of the areas of concern and interviews with facility engineers and occupants. The HVAC systems supplying air to these areas were thoroughly inspected. Air quality monitoring was conducted for standard parameters. These measurements helped assess ventilation effectiveness, air filtration and conditioning, and the infiltration of toxic gases.

SPC compared the survey results against applicable US Federal Standards and industry guidelines to check for compliance and provide recommendations. SPC contributed to a safe and healthy indoor learning environment for the students and staff at City College facilities.
