Specialty Consulting, Inc. (SPC) responded to a flood at Bernhard Moos Elementary School caused by a leaking sink on the third floor. SPC conducted a survey to identify asbestos-containing materials (ACM) potentially impacted by the water damage. The project involved thorough visual assessments, identification, and inventory of homogeneous areas with suspect materials. Homogeneous areas are defined by building materials that appear uniform in color and texture.
SPC conducted physical assessments of each identified homogeneous area to evaluate the friability and condition of the suspect ACM. Bulk samples were collected from drywall ceilings and spray-on fireproofing and sent to Sterling Lab’s Analysis Corporation for Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) analysis.
The unique challenge of this project was ensuring a comprehensive and accurate assessment amidst the urgency of flood response. SPC’s systematic approach and meticulous sampling ensured thorough evaluation, ultimately confirming that no ACM was present during this limited survey. This allowed for safe and effective remediation of the water damage without the need for asbestos abatement, ensuring the safety of the school's environment for students and staff.
