Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital underwent a $92 million expansion to enhance its facilities. This project included converting the west wing to all private rooms, expanding the oncology center, replacing the helipad, and constructing new parking decks. Specialty Consulting, Inc. (SPC) was engaged to perform an indoor air quality survey on all hospital floors to assess levels of specific air quality parameters associated with exhaust from fossil fuels and asphalt fumes. This survey was prompted by concerns about air quality due to ongoing roof work near the HVAC system intakes.
SPC's comprehensive survey spanned several days and involved real-time monitoring of Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxides, Sulfur Dioxide, Volatile Organic Compounds, and airborne particulates. Additionally, the HVAC units were inspected for any abnormal conditions. The results of these studies were submitted to the OSHA compliance officer to address complaints from hospital staff and patients regarding indoor air quality.
SPC's expertise in indoor environmental quality assessment and remedial programs, especially in occupied buildings with sensitive populations, ensured that operational areas of the hospital remained functional and adjacent areas were protected from potential contamination due to construction activities. This proactive approach allowed the hospital to continue its expansion while maintaining a safe environment for patients and staff.
