The Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center, once one of Chicago's oldest and largest hospitals, spanned a 29-building campus over 48 acres near Lake Michigan. After filing for bankruptcy, the facility was abandoned for nearly a decade. The Chicago 2016 Olympic organizing committee proposed repurposing the site for the Olympic Village. Specialty Consulting, Inc (SPC), provided construction management services, including asbestos abatement and ambient air quality monitoring during the abatement and demolition processes. Their asbestos abatement services involved monitoring and documenting contractor compliance with project specifications and regulatory requirements to ensure proper work practices were followed to control asbestos emissions.

SPC implemented an ambient air quality monitoring program to address community concerns about potential harmful emissions from demolition and remediation. This program utilized eight monitoring stations around the campus, conducting real-time and laboratory sample analysis for asbestos, lead, respirable and total dust, respirable silica, and other potential contaminants. The data collected informed modifications to construction practices as needed.

SPC's proactive approach, which included an effective public outreach and progress notification program, ensured the project's successful completion while maintaining community trust and safety.
