Specialty Consulting, Inc. (SPC) was retained by Old Veteran Construction (OVC) and the Public Building Commission of Chicago (PBCC) to conduct a pre-demolition hazardous materials survey at Malcolm X College, located at 1900 W. Van Buren Street in Chicago, IL. This project involved a comprehensive survey to identify asbestos-containing materials (ACM), lead-based paint (LBP), and universal waste within the 500,000-square-foot facility. The goal was to ensure these materials were properly abated and disposed of prior to demolition.

SPC's responsibilities included developing abatement design documents and providing oversight during abatement activities. The abatement drawings and specifications were crafted by Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) licensed lead and asbestos professionals to ensure regulatory compliance. SPC's oversight extended over six months, including weekends, to monitor the abatement process and ensure that all hazardous materials were managed safely and effectively.

One of the unique challenges of this project was coordinating the extensive abatement work within a large and complex facility while adhering to strict regulatory standards. SPC's thorough approach and expertise ensured that all hazardous materials were identified, documented, and safely removed, facilitating the safe and compliant demolition of the Malcolm X College building. This project underscored SPC's commitment to environmental safety and regulatory compliance in large-scale demolition projects.
