Specialty Consulting, Inc. (SPC) was engaged by Metra to conduct a comprehensive water quality survey at the 49th Street Shop. This project aimed to ensure that potable water sources met the standards set by the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). SPC's responsibilities included sampling water from various sources such as kitchens, lunchrooms, common areas, the boiler room, and spigots in maintenance shops.

The project required meticulous sampling procedures to maintain the integrity of the water samples. SPC collected a total of 30 samples, focusing on determining the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for potential contaminants like lead and copper, as well as Secondary Maximum Contaminant Levels (SMCLs) for elements such as zinc, manganese, and iron. The samples were preserved on ice and delivered to Sterling Labs in Chicago for analysis.

A unique challenge of this project was ensuring accurate and reliable sampling across diverse water sources within the facility. SPC addressed this by using standardized operating procedures and careful handling of samples. Based on the laboratory results, SPC provided Metra with detailed recommendations on flushing treatments to improve water quality.

Through precise execution and expert analysis, SPC successfully helped Metra maintain compliance with SDWA standards and enhance the safety of their potable water sources.
