Metra engaged Specialty Consulting, Inc. (SPC) to conduct an asbestos survey, design, and abatement for the renovation of the 10th floor of their headquarters building. The objective of these asbestos services was to identify any suspect visible and accessible asbestos-containing materials (ACM) that could be disturbed during the planned renovation activities.
SPC began by reviewing previous survey reports and scope of work documents to gain a comprehensive understanding of the project area. An extensive asbestos survey was then performed to identify the presence, quantity, and condition of ACM. Bulk samples were collected and analyzed using Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM), while floor tile samples underwent analysis through Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).
Following the survey, SPC prepared a detailed summary report that outlined the location, condition, and quantity of identified ACM in the project area. The report also included recommendations for the abatement of the ACM. SPC then developed design drawings and specifications for the abatement process. Additionally, a site-specific work plan was created, detailing the construction phases and the placement of containments to ensure safety and compliance during abatement.
The project proceeded to the bidding phase using the abatement design drawings and specifications prepared by SPC. This thorough approach ensured that all asbestos-related risks were effectively managed, facilitating a safe and compliant renovation of Metra's headquarters.
