Specialty Consulting, Inc. (SPC) undertook a critical project with the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center (VAMC) to ensure compliance with federal and local ordinances concerning hazardous waste management. The project focused on the microbiology laboratory waste stream. It addressed the challenge of managing a complex mixture including gram safranin, crystal violet, gram iodine, methanol, and gram decolorizer, alongside copious amounts of distilled water used in bacteriological processes. The laboratory discharged this stream into sanitary sewers via facility sink drains, posing environmental and regulatory concerns.

SPC's scope of work encompassed semi-annual sampling of the laboratory wastewater, adhering to EPA/RCRA and City of Chicago regulations. This involved testing wastewater samples from different lab analysts to ensure comprehensive compliance throughout the laboratory. Additionally, SPC assumed responsibility for generating compliance reports and documenting adherence to regulatory standards.

By conducting semi-annual wastewater testing, the VA microbiology laboratory benefits from SPC's expertise, ensuring ongoing compliance with local and federal regulations. This proactive approach mitigates environmental risks and safeguards the laboratory's reputation and operational continuity. SPC's systematic monitoring and reporting mechanisms offer a robust solution to the unique challenges of managing hazardous waste in laboratory settings.
